General Info

PEEK (PolyEtherEther-Ketone) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic that combines exceptional mechanical strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. PEEK grades provide chemical and water resistance similar to PPS (PolyPhenylene Sulfide), but they can operate at higher temperatures. PEEK has a continuous operating temperature of 480°F (250°C) and withstands exposure to hot water and steam without permanent loss of physical properties.

In hostile environments, PEEK serves as a high-strength alternative to fluoropolymers.

PEEK carries a V-0 flammability rating and produces very low smoke and toxic gas emissions when exposed to flame. Since 1998, unfilled PEEK has been approved by the FDA for food contact applications, meeting 21 CFR 177.2415 for repeated use.

The unfilled general-purpose grade is unreinforced and offers the highest elongation and toughness among PEEK grades. Unfilled PEEK is available in sheet and rod in natural (light brown or tan) and black.

PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) Virgin Natural is an unfilled, general-purpose grade of PEEK. It is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with excellent strength, outstanding chemical resistance, 480 V/mil dielectric strength, UL-94 V-0 flammability rating, toughness, and elongation.

PEEK maintains mechanical integrity at continuous operating temperatures up to 480°F (250°C), has very low moisture absorption, and extremely low outgassing, making it ideal for critical high-temp, high-strength applications.

  • Mechanical: Tensile strength 16,000 psi; flexural strength 25,000 psi; elongation 20%.
  • Thermal: Melting point 644°F (340°C); heat deflection temperature 320°F (160°C); Max Continuous Use Temp 480°F (249°C); Minimum Use Temp -76°F (-60°C).
  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent against most chemicals, but limited vs. halogens and halogen acids.
  • Compliance: FDA-compliant for food contact (21 CFR 177.2415).
  • Flammability: UL-94 V-0 rating; low smoke and toxic gas emissions.
  • Outgassing: Extremely low (TML ~0.31%, CVCM ~0.00%).

PEEK Virgin Natural is found in sealing, bearing, wear, and structural applications in higher temperature and higher strength applications. Below are some common industries and applications:

  • Aerospace and Automotive: Bearings, seals, connectors, manifolds.
  • Medical and Life Sciences: Sterilizable surgical tools, FDA food contact components, implants for USP Class VI grades of PEEK.
  • Semiconductor and Electronics: Low-outgassing parts, insulators, wafer handling tools.
  • Pump, Valve, Compressor: Pump and valve components, back-up rings, compressor parts.
  • Oil and Gas: Down hole components, connectors, back up-rings, and seals.
  • PEEK vs. PTFE (Teflon®): PEEK offers much higher strength at room temp and at higher temperatures, and much better dimensional stability. PTFE has lower friction (the lowest of all unfilled polymers), as well as better chemical resistance.
  • PEEK vs. Ultem® (PEI): PEEK handles higher heat and chemicals. Ultem offers better electrical properties, is used in structural applications, and is lower cost.
  • PEEK vs. Nylon and Acetal: PEEK far outperforms in creep resistance, strength, and heat tolerance. Nylon and Acetal are better choices in bearing and wear or structural applications at lower temperatures.
  • PEEK vs. Torlon® and Celazole® PBI: PEEK is easier to machine and process. Torlon and PBI perform better at extreme temperatures, with PBI being the highest performing in terms of extreme temperatures.
  • Machining: Excellent for CNC machining; requires carbide or diamond tooling for best finishes.
  • Injection Molding: Moldable at high processing temps (~400°C).
  • 3D Printing: Available in filament form for high-temperature additive manufacturing.
