General Info

Celazole PBI is the world's highest performing engineering plastic currently available. It offers the highest heat resistance (it does not melt) and mechanical property retention up to 800F 427 C). It has better wear resistance and load carrying capabilities at extreme temperatures than any other reinforced or unreinforced engineering plastic. As an unreinforced material, Celazole PBI is very clean in terms of ionic impurity and it does not outgas (except water). These characteristics make this material very attractive to semiconductor manufacturers for vacuum chamber applications. Celazole PBI has excellent ultrasonic transparency which makes it an ideal choice for parts such as probe tip lenses in ultrasonic measuring equipment.

Celazole® PBI polymers are uniquely suited for metal replacement and exhibit excellent thermal stability. With excellent resistance to high temperatures and chemicals, and best in class wear resistance, parts made with Celazole® PBI work harder and last longer.

  • Water Vapor Regained (WVR%) 0.40%

Limitations

  • PBI is extremely hard and can be challenging to fabricate.
  • Polycrystalline diamond tools are recommended when fabricating production quantities.
  • PBI tends to be notch sensitive. All corners should be radiused (0.040" min.) and edges chamfered to maximize part toughness.
  • High tolerance fabricated components should be stored in sealed containers (usually polybags with desiccant) to avoid dimensional changes due to moisture absorption. •Cracking or Blistering - While it is not common, serious part damage can result from severe environmental shocks when PBI parts have sorbed moisture. This may occur when a moisture-containing PBI part experiences a rapid and extreme change in temperature nd/or pressure. For example, a part containing 4% moisture at ambient temperature and pressure which is then placed in full vacuum at 300C may crack or blister as the moisture escapes. Likewise, a PBI part saturated in steam and then rapidly decompressed may crack or blister. To avoid these situations, users must understand how to store and dry PBI parts (Contact Us for Guidelines).

Applications

  • Contact Seals
  • Guide Rollers
  • High Temp Bushings & Bearings
  • Hot Runner Insulator Bushings
  • Thermal Isolators
  • Vacuum Tips

Resin Trade Names

  • Celazole® U-60 PBI

Manufacturer Trade Names

  • Celazole® PBI

Boedeker Plastics, Inc. stocks & supplies plastic sheet, rod, tube, film and custom profiles and machine parts from these shapes that are produced from plastic resin. In many cases the manufacturer of the shape has their own product trade name. If your specification calls for a specific resin grade or manufacturer trade name, we can supply a shape made from that resin to meet your specification or suggest an equal. If you require a specific resin or brand it must be specified at the time of order.
