Water and wastewater treatment involves processing water to meet specific end use standards for uses like: industrial water supply, drinking water, irrigation and other uses by removing contaminants and other particulate types. Both water and wastewater treatment utilize pumps, valves, piping, holding tanks and other equipment which is exposed to chemicals like chlorine, abrasive media, impact and other demanding conditions that commonly create unwanted downtime with part failure.
Plastics and composites are utilized throughout these treatment processes for bearing and wear and structural applications. Chemical resistant plastics and composites are utilized for pump and valve seals and other components to help improve operating efficiency by reducing downtime and increasing MTBR (mean time between repair). In wastewater plants, there are many abrasive and corrosive applications in processing large solids, sludge and other unwanted media where plastics and composites have been used for years to reduce downtime. Some of these applications include: sprockets, wear strip, wiper blades, plows / chicane blades, and others. In chain conveyor applications UHMW has been utilized for years to extend the chain life by eliminating metal on metal contact in rectangular clarifier applications. In many cases, if it is a corrosion or wear application, plastics and composites are an ideal fit for the most challenging water and wastewater applications.
