General Info

Sustamid® 6 FR provides exceptional flame-retardant properties and has built-in fire protection in a strong and lightweight material without the weight of conventional materials like steel.

With a very high LOI (Limiting Oxygen Index), Sustamid® 6 FR, is your ideal choice for applications that require high flame retardant and mechanical properties combined in a lightweight material. Sustamid® 6 FR, a flame-resistant extruded polyamide 6, can be easily machined into parts with high strength and rigidity properties and good friction qualities.

Sustamid® 6 FR is a semi-finished extruded product made of flame-retardant polyamide 6 (PA 6) available in sheet, rod, profile and custom machined parts. This material, which meets the relevant requirements of the new European Rail Vehicle Standard DIN EN 45545-2:2013, facilitates production of large-sized machined components and component parts in small piece numbers.

With 40 percent, Sustamid® 6 FR stands out through a very high oxygen index (LOI – Limiting Oxygen Index), and is phosphorus and halogen-free. Fire behaviour is classified in accordance with UL 94 with V0.

Compared to conventional materials, such as steel (7.85 g/cm³), the low density of Sustamid® 6 FR (1.17 g/cm³) offers unequivocal benefits regarding weight and thus construction. At the same time, the material possesses a high degree of stiffness, tensile strength as well as good sliding and wear properties with simultaneously outstanding corrosion and chemical resistance.

Capable of Short Term Temp up to 320 F / 160 C

Evaluated to the following, Sustamid 6 FR is ideal for use in the aerospace industry:

• ASTM E162 Flame spread
• ASTM E662 Smoke density
• ASTM E1354 Choloric count
• BSS 7239 Smoke/toxicity
• FAR 25.853 and FAR 28.855
• SMP 800 C Toxicity

Limitations

  • High Moisture Absorption
  • Limited Resistance to Strong Acids & Alkalies Note - Nylons can absorb up to 7% (by weight) water under high humidity or submerged in water. This can result in dimensional changes up to 2% and a corresponding reduction of physical properties. Proper design techniques can frequently compensate for this factor.

Boedeker Plastics, Inc. stocks & supplies plastic sheet, rod, tube, film and custom profiles and machine parts from these shapes that are produced from plastic resin. In many cases the manufacturer of the shape has their own product trade name. If your specification calls for a specific resin grade or manufacturer trade name, we can supply a shape made from that resin to meet your specification or suggest an equal. If you require a specific resin or brand it must be specified at the time of order.
