General Info

PolyTetraFluoroEthylene is a fluorocarbon-based polymer and is commonly abbreviated PTFE.

While DuPont is the only manufacturer of the most famous brand of PTFE (Teflon™), several other manufacturers make their own brands of PTFE, which are commonly used as substitute PTFE material. PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction of any polymer. Its dynamic coefficient of friction ranges from .04 to .06, and its static coefficient of friction ranges from .05 to .08. Due to its low coefficient of friction, PTFE is often utilized for sliding applications.

In addition to a very low coefficient of friction, PTFE has outstanding chemical resistance, a wide operating temperature range from cryogenic to 500F, resistance to weathering, high impact strength, electrical and thermal insulation, and self-lubricating properties. It is unsuitable for high-load applications and has a high thermal expansion, so it is generally not used for tight tolerance applications.

PTFE is inherently resistant to UV degradation and Highly Reflective to ultraviolet light, with Reflectivity greater than 85% in the spectral range of 240-300 nanometers. Up to 99% reflective in some cases.  Which makes PTFE an ideal choice for UVC light reflective barriers for Far UVC and Germicidal UVC disinfecting systems.

Manufacturer Trade Names

Boedeker Plastics, Inc. stocks & supplies plastic sheet, rod, tube, film and custom profiles and machine parts from these shapes that are produced from plastic resin. In many cases the manufacturer of the shape has their own product trade name. If your specification calls for a specific resin grade or manufacturer trade name, we can supply a shape made from that resin to meet your specification or suggest an equal. If you require a specific resin or brand it must be specified at the time of order.
