CELAZOLE® U-SERIES & T-SERIES PBI Plastics Product Family

About CELAZOLE® U-SERIES & T-SERIES PBI

Celazole® PBI is the world’s highest performance polymer for the most extreme applications.  Celazole® PBI (polybenzimidazole) U Series is a fully aromatic heterocyclic thermoplastic polymer that provides the ultimate in thermal mechanical properties and sets the standard for engineering polymer performance.  Characterized by its 427°C (800°F) glass transition temperature, high strength and broad chemical resistance, it’s meant for use in extreme environments. Celazole® PBI T-Series are blends of PBI with polyaryletherketones either (PEEK or PEKK).

CELAZOLE® U-SERIES & T-SERIES Key Properties

U-Series

  • Celazole® PBI (polybenzimidazole) U-Series is a unique and highly stable linear hetrocyclic polymer. PBI is characterized by high strength; it exhibits excellent thermal stability, is hydrolytically stable after exposure to high pressure steam or water, is broadly resistant to hydrocarbons, alcohols, weak acids, weak bases, hydrogen sulfide, chlorinated solvents, oils, heat transfer fluids and many other organic chemicals.

T-Series

  • Celazole® T-Series products are PBI compounds that combine the superior mechanical properties and thermal resistance of PBI with the melt process ability of polyaryletherketones (PEEK or PEKK), which are available in glass, carbon and bearing grade blends for improved stiffness, wear resistance and other enhanced properties for specific applications.

U-Series Key Properties

  • Best Mechanical Properties to 425°C (800°F)
  • Continuous Service Capability of 343°C (650°F) in Air
  • Continuous Service Capability Of 399°C (750°F) in Inert Environments
  • Highest Heat Deflection Temperature 427°C (800°F)
  • Highest Mechanical Properties of Any Plastic Above  204°C (400°F)
  • Lowest Coefficient Of Thermal Expansion And Highest Compressive Strength
  • Short Term Exposure Potential To 538°C (1,000°F) Of All Unfilled Plastics
  • Low Outgassing Material
  • Total Mass Loss (TML%) 2.5%
  • Collected Volatile Condensable Materials (CVCM%) 0.00%
  • Water Vapor Regained (WVR%) 0.40%

T-Series Key Properties

  • Excellent mechanical properties that are maintained well above the 143ºC (289ºF) Tg of the PEEK component
  • Low strain over time as compared to polyimide and filled PEEK’s, even at 300ºC (572ºF)
  • Improved levels of equipment performance, weight savings and/or thinner, smaller profiles
  • Are particularly suited for mechanical service applications with high load at elevated temperatures
  • Have excellent thermal stability – enabling metal replacement
  • Self-lubricating TL-60 displays low wear rates under conditions of high pressure (P) and velocity (V), a high limiting PV

OPTIMAL FOR PARTS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES

The advantage of T-Series over unfilled PEEK is the unexpected property set that results from the combination with PBI and other fillers (when present) that yield higher heat deflection temperatures (HDT), higher moduli, higher strength, improved wear resistance and lower creep. In the T-Series compound, HDT’s can be raised to 330ºC (626ºF), just below the crystalline melting point of PEEK. The effect can be observed in the accompanying dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) chart for TU-60 below.

EXCEPTIONAL WEAR PERFORMANCE

Celazole TL-60 is an injection moldable polymer containing a dry-lube package with superior wear resistance.  In a PV range of 100,000 – 200,000 psi-ft/min (3.5 – 7 MPa-m/sec), it’s Wear Factor K is just 20x10-10 in3 -min/ft-lb-hr (4.0x10-7 mm3 /N-m) and its Dynamic Coef. of Friction is just 0.055. This material is designed for high loads at any speed and outperforms wear-grade PAI, PI, and PEEK under similar conditions. Without additional lubrication, it runs 40-50F cooler than the competition.  See the Chart on the lower right below.

CELAZOLE® U-SERIES & T-SERIES Available Grades

  • Celazole® U-60 Unfilled PBI - Celazole PBI is the highest performing engineering plastic currently available. It offers the highest heat resistance (it does not melt) and mechanical property retention up to 426 C (800F). It has better wear resistance and load carrying capabilities at extreme temperatures than any other reinforced or unreinforced engineering plastic. See Also, Duratron CU 60 PBI.
  • Celazole® TU-60 Unfilled PBI PEEK - is a high performance unfilled blend, ideal for applications requiring no fillers. This material works well for complex geometries in high temp, high load applications. It is ideal for lamp sockets, connectors and backup seals
  • Celazole U-60CF - is an ultra-high strength carbon fiber reinforced compression molded PBI variant available as stock shape.
  • Celazole® TF-60C Carbon Filled PBI PEEK - is a carbon-reinforced blend, ideal for parts that require high strength, very low creep, and deflection resistance. A great match for planetary gears, office equipment, semiconductor, electronic and mechanical applications.
  • Celazole ® U-60 ESD - are electro-static dissipative (ESD) and conductive variants of U-60 available as a stock shape or part. U-60 ESD grades incorporate carbon fiber to increase the conductivity of the finished part and is often used where static discharge is a concern.  Standard grades include U-60 ESD E5 Conductive and U-60 ESD E8 Static Dissipative.
  • Celazole® TL-60 Lubricated PBI PEEK - s a lube grade PBI PEEK blend offering superior wear resistance, low friction, chemical resistance and high load bearing capability. It’s well suited for rotor vanes, thrust bearings, plane bearings, bushings and other friction management applications – particularly under load.
  • Celazole® U-60SD High Purity PBI - is a high purity/ultra-low metal Semiconductor grade PBI thermoplastic recommended for use in Dry Etch Chambers and Sputtering Systems, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD)
  • Celazole® TF-60V Glass Filled PBI PEEK - is a glass-reinforced blend offering thermal and electrical insulation, wear resistance and dimensional stability. An excellent choice for high temperature electrical insulators, plasma torch drag cup shields, swirl baffles and parts requiring minimal thermal expansion.
